Campaigns Assistant

for the Cumbria Mayoral, Westmorland & Furness Council, and Cumberland Council election campaigns for 2027

 

Purpose of the job

**Please note: Due to the nature of this role, a full driving licence and own vehicle is essential (travel expenses are paid for mileage, but not commuting).

 

Westmorland, Furness & Eden Liberal Democrats are seeking an enthusiastic and self-motivated person to play a key role in the lead up to the campaign to retain control of Westmorland & Furness council, and win the mayoral election in 2027.

 

This is a fantastic opportunity to help build on our previous success in both local and national elections, working with one of the most electorally successful constituency campaigns team in the UK, by building the infrastructure and organisation necessary to elect a Lib Dem led council and a Lib Dem mayor.

 

Your role will be ‘hands on’. Your duties will vary, but will include being responsible for organising and leading canvassing sessions and helping with the production and delivery of campaign literature. Your role will primarily involve being out and about campaigning, mainly in the northern part of the mayoral area.

 

Salary: £26,039 per annum, plus a potential for reward and recognition payment.

25 days holiday per year, plus bank holidays, as well as an extended Christmas break totalling two weeks, which includes the Christmas and New Year bank holidays.

Hours: 37.5 hours per week – you will work flexibly to take account of early evening and weekend canvassing sessions. Additional hours can be taken back in lieu.

Tenure: fixed-term contract until two months after the date of the local elections in 2027.

Location: The constituency office in Kendal will be your base, but most of the time you will be out and about in the Cumberland and Westmorland, Furness and Eden area.

The line manager for this role will be the Constituency Campaigns Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with the development and maintenance of the local volunteer delivery network.
  • Joining councillors, candidates and volunteers out on the doorsteps to do delivery, surveying and canvassing.
  • Recruiting, developing and regularly communicating with volunteers.
  • Assisting with the literature output from production to distribution, including delivering literature.
  • Assisting with the delivery of a programme of doorstep and telephone voter contacts to mutually agreed targets.
  • Retain records and information confidentially and in line with the data protection legislation.
  • Undertake such training as is required and recommended to develop and update the required skills.
  • Undertake any other such duties as the line manager may require to further support campaigning and organisation.

     

Person Specification

The successful candidate will be hard working, flexible, organised, pragmatic and politically astute. They will ideally have experience of working in a busy and fast paced environment. They will be willing and able to support the local party administratively and logistically and be willing and able to work with both paid staff members and volunteers.

  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under pressure and prioritise a demanding workload to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritise and complete tasks.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team.
  • Ability to create and sustain a positive working relationship with the MP and external bodies that generates confidence, respect, credibility, and trust.
  • Energy and commitment.
  • Ability to work flexible hours when required.
  • Will be sympathetic to the aims and objectives of the Liberal Democrats.
