Farron Backs Freedom of Information Extension

Tim Farron MP has backed a campaign to extend the Freedom of Information Act and to remove the right of Ministers to veto requests.

Lib Dem MP Tom Brake today introduced a Ten Minute Rule motion to extend Freedom of Information to cover private companies and charities contracted to carry out work for public authorities and the Royal Household. Energy, water and rail companies could therefore be subject to far greater public scrutiny.

The proposed law change would also prevent ministers from overruling decisions by the Information Commissioner and Information Tribunal.

Tim said: "The Freedom of Information Act is an important tool which enables the public to hold the government to account. With ever more of the state's work being carried out by private contractors, it stands to reason that the Freedom of Information Act should be extended accordingly. It would also stop ministers having the right to veto the release of potentially embarrassing information."
