Farron Challenges Chancellor as Cumbrian Business Funding Slashed

South Lakeland MP Tim Farron has accused the Chancellor Phillip Hammond of neglecting Cumbria, as the government looks set to turn down over 90% of the funding bids to boost Cumbrian businesses.

Cumbria LEP had expected to receive £165million to boost local businesses, but it is now thought the government will pay out less than 10% of this figure. Cumbria LEP is now expecting to receive just £10-14million.

Projects which now look set to be turned down include:

• £20million to promote rural businesses including funding for a dairy processing plant
• £20million to promote tourism in Cumbria
• £10million to help roll out broadband in rural areas
• £20 million for skills and training
• £20 million to support small businesses

Tim has written to the Chancellor urging him to back the Cumbrian bid in its entirety.

Tim said: "The Chancellor has time to change his mind, and I am determined to push him to do that, but this rejection of Cumbria's businesses, farmers, tourism industry and education sector is a disgrace. These projects will create and protect jobs, boost the local economy, and give hope to local communities struggling with sluggish broadband. The Conservative government is neglecting our county and we will not stand for it."
