Farron delighted as Government inquiry rules in favour of ‘save the cheque’ campaign

South Lakes MP Tim Farron is delighted at a huge win for his 'save the cheque' campaign as the Treasury Select Committee inquiry has supported proposals to rethink the decision to abolish the cheque.

Set up in 2010 as a result of pressure from Tim and other concerned MPs, the inquiry focused on how doing away with cheques would affect the many individuals and businesses that use them frequently. The inquiry raised concerns about the costs of the proposed scheme as well as the impact it would have on many vulnerable groups such as the elderly and those on lower incomes. It also found that claims that the cheque was in irreversible decline were exaggerated.

Commenting, Tim said: "Plans that the banks have made to remove the cheque are ridiculous and fundamentally unfair, as many of Britain's most vulnerable people still rely on them as an important means of paying for goods and services.

"I'm delighted that the Government has begun to take our concerns onboard and is taking steps to remind banks that it is their duty to listen to the concerns of their customers."
