Farron Wins Ministerial Go-Ahead for Cancer Unit

29 Oct 2008

Plans to build a new cancer service unit in Kendal are underway according to MP Tim Farron, after Health Minister Ann Keen MP gave the go-ahead, during a Westminster Hall debate in Parliament today.

Speaking after the debate Mr Farron said:

"I'm encouraged that the Minister (Ann Keen MP) has agreed to look at ours plans for a new cancer service centre in Kendal. We still have a lot of work to do before we get the world class cancer facilities we want; but I am sure that the local determination to have this centre built means that we will be successful.

"Our argument for asking for this centre to be built in Kendal is that people suffering from cancer shouldn't be made to travel long distances to receive treatment. The fact that the Minister recognised how debilitating and draining long travelling times for cancer sufferers can be shows that progress is possible.

"She did admit that it would be a challenge; but I'm hopeful that with her support, and help from the community, that we can start making real progress getting Kendal the cancer facilities it desperately needs."
