Former Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell has been visiting the Lake District, and has taken time out of his holiday to meet Lib Dem Police and Crime Commissioner Candidate Loraine Birchall and back her campaign.

Sir Menzies Campbell and his wife, who are currently staying near Windermere, have long enjoyed visiting the Lake District.

Sir Menzies Campbell has given his backing to Loraine's campaign for fair funding for rural police forces.

Menzies said: "My wife and I have been coming to the Lake District since Tim Farron was a boy, but it's never been more important than now. It's been wonderful to see the determination of the local people to get back to normal after the floods. This is a beautiful part of the UK and I'm only sorry more Westminster-based politicians haven't come here for their holidays.

"In rural areas, policing is often much more difficult than in towns and cities. It's essential, therefore, that there should be sufficient funding to ensure the security and confidence of the people that live there. That's why we should all be backing Lorraine's campaign for a fair funding deal for rural police."
