Independent review of Cumbrian shootings tragedy

Reacting to yesterday's release of the independent review into the Cumbrian shootings on 2 June this year, MP Tim Farron said:

"This independent review is a thoughtful response to the appalling events of 2 June. It's vital that MPs consider this report without rushing to judgement. No one's memory will be honoured by knee-jerk legislation."

In particular Mr Farron welcomed the suggestion that GPs could be automatically informed if their patients have a gun licence. This would allow them to recommend to police that action be taken if they feared for their patient's psychological state.

"The suggestion that GPs could be involved to add an additional safeguard is a sensible one - but it's important that GPs and patient groups give their views on this before the law is changed."

"That such a horrendous series of events could happen in our county still begs belief, even after five months. It is right that the Chief Constable commissioned this review and it is important that politicians consider the proposals calmly."
