Local MP Tim Farron has today launched a save our libraries campaign in a bid to save 18 libraries from the axe. A petition has been launched asking local people throughout the South Lakes to join the campaign to save the service.

Last week the Conservative-led county council launched a consultation on the future of libraries throughout Cumbria. Under the proposals all the mobile libraries are to be removed from service. Many local residents agree with Tim that these proposals would removal a service that is well loved by many local residents.

The plans are part of Cumbria County Councils 'radical review' of its £6 million pound service. But estimates show that removing mobile libraries would only save around £100,000

Areas like Grayrigg, Burton, Holme and the Western Dales would be left without a service if these plans are implemented. These services are well used, in Burton over 20 people visit the mobile library every week.

Commenting, Tim said; "In a county like ours library services play a key role in our community. When I heard about the county council plans I was shocked. Many residents in places like Burton, Holme and in the Western Dales use the library services. It is a chance to meet friends and catch up when the library van comes. These proposals will hit older people the hardest. I hope local residents join the campaign to save the services."
