South Lakes MP Tim Farron has joined with Green MP Caroline Lucas to propose a bill to improve citizenship classes in schools.

The bill titled: 'Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (Statutory Requirement) Bill', says:

"Bill to require the Secretary of State to provide that Personal, Social, Health and Economic education (PHSE) be a statutory requirement for all state funded schools; for PHSE to include Sex and Relationships Education (SRE) and education on ending violence against women and girls; LGBT education; to provide for initial and continuing teacher education and guidance on best practice for delivering and inspecting PSHE and SRE education; and for connected purposes."

Tim has previously called for mental health to be put onto the curriculum and it to be given more emphasis. Tim has said: "Children in Cumbria and throughout the UK need to be supported and I think mental health should treated as the same level as physical health."

The presentation bill will be tabled in Parliament tomorrow.

Tim said: "I am delighted to support Caroline's bill and work with other MP's of all parties to try and improve PSHE lessons. This really is a major issue that politicians have ducked for too long. I hope with this bill, we can make these classes better and break the taboo of lots of issues like domestic violence, mental health and sexual health."
