MP tables Parliamentary motion calling for HS2 to stop in Cumbria after Government gives high-speed trains the green light

Following today's announcement that the Government have given the go-ahead for HS2, local MP Tim Farron will table an Early Day Motion in Parliament this week calling for the high-speed trains to stop in Cumbria.

The current plans will see high-speed trains from London pass through the county without stopping, meaning passengers on the West Coast Main Line will have to change at Preston to get to Oxenholme, Penrith and Carlisle.

Tim said: "Whether you are in favour of HS2 or not, it's unacceptable that the Government's plans are to go right the way through Cumbria without stopping.

"If Cumbrian taxpayers are helping to foot the bill for HS2 and when you think that the Lake District is the second biggest visitor destination in the UK after London, then it's completely wrong that our county doesn't get a stop."
