MP tells Government to give support to the excluded three million not second homeowners

On the floor of the House of Commons this afternoon, South Lakes MP Tim Farron urged ministers to give support to the millions of people excluded from government support schemes, rather than providing tax cuts for second homeowners.

Speaking during Housing questions, Tim said: "Excessive second homeownership robs communities of life, schools and other services.

"Does he understand then why people in the South Lakes are so appalled that the Government has chosen decision to give a £15,000 stamp duty bonus to those lucky enough to be able to afford a second home?

"When there are three million hard working people excluded from government support at this moment, aren't these appalling priorities?

"Will he end the second homes bonus and instead support the three million excluded?"

In response the Housing minister Chris Pincher said that second homeowners "contribute significantly to the economy" and that the Government have "got the balance right" between "the needs of the local economy" and "the rights of local people".

Speaking afterwards, Tim said: "It's absolutely extraordinary that ministers seriously think they've got the balance right here - try telling that to residents in Elterwater where 80% houses are second homes

"And try defending this £15,000 tax cut for second homeowners to the plumber in my constituency who has been excluded from government support simply because he decided to become self-employed in the past year.

"The Conservatives are completely out of touch."
