MP urges North Tyneside Council to urgently review decision to close High Borrans Outdoor Education Centre
Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron has written to the Chief Executive of North Tyneside Council after the authority announced the closure of High Borrans Outdoor Education Centre near Windermere.
Tim, who visited the centre just last month in his role as Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Outdoor Learning, described the news as “absolutely devastating” and urged the council to review the decision.
In his letter to the council’s CEO, Tim said: “Outdoor education is an absolutely incredible resource that is transformational for kids from across the country.
“I only recently visited the High Borrans Centre, and the team there are brilliant at what they do and dedicated to ensuring kids have the best experience possible.
“In addition, I know that the centre is used by 76 schools in North Tyneside every year, providing these kids with lifelong memories.
“So, I am sure you will understand my shock and upset at this news. I realise that the council intends to enter a formal consultation with staff; however, I appreciate that in most instances like this, the council will intend to close the site.
“Given this, I would like to request that North Tyneside Council recognises the strong public support for the continued operation of this site and reviews whether closing it is the correct decision.”
