School funding review overlooks need for more cash
South Lakes MP Tim Farron has welcomed plans to provide a fairer funding deal for schools in rural areas, but has warned that the plans still leave the education system desperately short of funding.
The plans were put forward by the Education Secretary yesterday, and will now go to a consultation phase until the 22nd March.
Tim said: "I welcome the government's decision to tackle the historic underfunding of rural schools. However, this doesn't change the fact that the government has simply dismissed Headteachers' pleas for extra cash.
"By the time the new formula is introduced in 2020, schools will have seen cuts of over £3 billion and per pupil funding fall by 8%. There is a vast shortfall in education spending which will not be addressed by these changes, and it is the education which our children receive which will be hit."
