South Lakes leads Arts and Culture ranking

25 Nov 2016

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has welcomed the news that South Lakeland has been ranked in the top 2% of all local authorities in the country for its arts and culture offerings.

The new national survey was undertaken by the Royal Society of Arts, and involved research into a wide variety of different factors. South Lakeland is ranked in the top 2% overall, and scored particularly highly in the 'cultures and memories' element, where it was in the top 1%. It also came in the top 5% for 'landscape and natural heritage'.

Tim said: "This is a fantastic result for our area, and confirms South Lakeland's reputation as a leading rural cultural destination. There is a superb array of different arts and culture offerings in our area - from world famous events such as the Kendal Mountain Film Festival through to museums and exhibitions celebrating the Lake District's renowned heritage, such as Beatrix Potter's house and Wordsworth's Cottage.

"South Lakeland punches far above its weight when it comes to Arts and Culture, which is a boost not only for local residents but also for our tourist industry. My heartfelt thanks go to South Lakeland District Council for their tireless work promoting arts and culture in our area - this survey shows their efforts have been a resounding success."
