South Lakes MP Tim Farron has welcomed the news that there will be a massive expansion of kerbside recycling of plastics and cardboard to thousands more homes in South Lakeland. Tim has thanked the Lib Dem run district council for their work to make this happen.

The first step will be to roll-out fortnightly collections of plastics and cardboard to southern and eastern parts of Kendal - including the Heron Hill and Bellingham Road areas -this will be starting in January 2015.

This will be followed by the council working towards achieving a greater market return for the materials collected. Once in place this would enable the roll-out of the plastics and cardboard collections to the whole district, with an aim to achieve this during 2015/16.

As a third step, work will commence to consider how food waste could be collected and recycled, with a possible kerbside collection from 2016/17.

Tim has thanked councillors Sue Sanderson, Clare Feeney-Johnson and Peter Thornton for their work in bringing this to fruition.

Tim said: "I am asked regularly about doorstep recycling and it was something I raised with the council in our regular meetings. I am delighted that the pilot has been deemed a success and we will now see it rolled out first to the rest of Kendal and eventually all of South Lakeland.

"I am proud of the council's environmental record. We are working together on improving air quality, building infrastructure for cycling and on issues like 20's plenty. We hope to build on this success in the weeks and months ahead."

Cllr Sue Sanderson, Portfolio Holder for Environment and People at the council, added: "As a council one of our main environmental ambitions is to expand our kerbside recycling, and it is exciting to see the first part of the rollout."
