Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron has warmly welcomed the news that  developers will be required to install solar panels and heat pumps in all new homes in England from 2028.

The proposals were put forward in a Private Members Bill by the Liberal Democrat MP for Cheltenham, Max Wilkinson, and were formally adopted by the Government this week.

Tim tabled an Early Day Motion back in 2024 which called for all new-build homes to be fitted with solar panels.

Tim said: “I want to thank my colleague Max Wilkinson for his excellent hard work on this.

“This will reduce bills for owners of newbuild homes, reduce pressure on the energy grid, and help fight climate change.

“By ensuring new homes are built with solar panels and heat pumps, we can also save people from being left with huge bills having to retrofit their home later down the line.

“But we shouldn’t stop there. The Government must ensure that solar panels are put on even more new buildings such as new schools and hospitals.”
